3-Phase Electric Motor Soft Starters 

Soft starts are an economical compromise to a full-fledged VFD (Variable Frequency Drive).  They do not offer variable speed for a motor like a VFD does, but they do provide a ramped acceleration on start up, reducing in-rush current which saves on utility expenses and mechanical wear.  Most soft starts also provide advanced control, such as remote start, stop, monitoring, and networked computer interfacing.
